The Massachusetts Forest Alliance ("MFA") seeks an Executive Director to advance and lead a trade organization and associated land trust that advocates on behalf of a strong, sustainable forest economy, with a focus on keeping forests as forests. MFA was formed in 2012 through the merger of existing organizations representing foresters, landowners, harvesters, and others who make a living from forest management. MFA has successfully represented the interests of its constituent member groups to the public and government. The position location and employment arrangements are flexible; compensation is anticipated to range from $50,000-$70,000 annually, depending on experience.

Job Title: Executive Director Reports To: Board of Directors Supervises: Staff of two part-time employees, occasional consultants and volunteers Compensation: $50,000-$70,000 (Annual) Full-time: Flexible employment arrangements considered Benefits: Yes The Massachusetts Forest Alliance (MFA) is a 501(c)(6) organization formed in 2012 from three existing groups: the Massachusetts Land League dba the MA Forest Landowners Assn., the MA Assn. of Professional Foresters, and the MA Wood Producers Assn. MFA advocates for a strong and sustainable forest economy, representing the viewpoints of forest landowners, foresters, and forest industry professionals in matters of forest policy. MFA develops a variety of informational materials and continuing education opportunities for its member groups. The Massachusetts Forest Trust, MFA's 501(c)(3) affiliate, holds real property interests in forest land. MFA sponsors the MA Tree Farm Program and serves as fiscal agent for Project Learning Tree in Massachusetts. As the chief executive officer of the Massachusetts Forest Alliance, the executive director oversees all aspects of the organization's work, in accordance with policies set by the Board of Directors. Ongoing operations include: member recruitment and fundraising; development and delivery of education programs; communications; and advocacy. The executive director reports to the Massachusetts Forest Alliance Board of Directors. Primary responsibilities of the position include:

  • Coordinate all activities of the MFA and relations with members, other associations, agencies, boards, and the public at-large
  • Develop and oversee initiatives to increase membership and secure stable organizational funding
  • Assist with development and implementation of legislative and regulatory goals
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with other landowner organizations and with municipal, government, civic, corporate, educational, and environmental groups and partners
  • Prepare and submit grant applications and obtain funding from available sources, both public and private, in support of MFA's strategic priorities
  • Oversee publication of MFA's quarterly print publication and monthly e-newsletters
  • Actively seek appropriate media opportunities to ensure the MFA and its mission are effectively presented to the public
  • Formulate and manage the annual budget, in consultation with the board of directors
  • Facilitate review and periodic revision of five-year strategic plan
  • Coordinate and attend board and annual meetings; present monthly activity reports
  • Provide organizational continuity and support for the board, staff and membership
  • Participate in local, state, regional and national conferences, as appropriate
  • Oversee relationship with existing contractor for membership tracking, mailing, billing, accounts receivable and payable, messages and other bookkeeping and administrative functions
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors
    Candidates must:
    • Demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively with various audiences, including the general public, allied organizations, and members of the legislative and executive branches of government
    • Have a willingness to register as a lobbyist with the office of the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth
    • Have an ability to facilitate policy development within the organization
    • Have an understanding of fundraising, budget development and management
    • Demonstrate an ability to work independently with minimal supervision The exceptional candidate will also be able to demonstrate at least some of the following:
      • A background in natural resources policy/ management; an understanding of challenges and opportunities facing woodland owners and forest professionals in Massachusetts and New England
      • A familiarity with process of policy development and implementation, in legislative and executive branches
      • An understanding of laws and regulations that govern 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(6) tax-exempt organizations; prior non-profit experience a plus
      • Experience applying for and implementing grants
      • An understanding of social media, and how they can be used effectively
      • A familiarity with non-profit organization accounting practices
