Basic Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a related specialized area or field, or equivalent is required plus a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree. CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Department of Defense Secret security clearance is not required at time of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required. Responsibilities for this Position General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Fleet Documentation Technical Editor/Writer. This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation's core defense/intelligence services and systems. General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND TASKS: Creates, develops, plans, writes and edits complex operational, instructional, interactive electronic technical manuals (IETMs), maintenance or test procedures for paper, multimedia or web-based publication Conducts interviews with various users and technical staff to gather data for documentation Researches and translates technical information into manuals and/or web-based documents for nontechnical and technical users Acquires subject knowledge by interviewing product developers, observing performance of production methods, referring to technical specifications, blueprints, engineering illustrations, and trade journals Recommends formats responsive to technical and customer requirements Produces products that conform to the company documentation and quality assurance standards Responsible for defining and determining best practice process and procedures for collected data to be transposed to professional writing product Works with junior writers providing feedback and critiquing work in order to help develop leadership skills, documentation skills and expertise with production tools, projects, etc. Documents engineering processes and specifications by editing software developer and engineering staff's notes and procedures and applying formatting in order to support the writing and publication of hardware and software test procedures, white papers, readme files, etc. Proactively informs the technical documentation lead of assignment status, issues or concerns, including issues of scope, schedule, process, and quality through informal meetings, and emailed status reports to keep the technical documentation lead informed Ensures the accurate preparation of documents for interim and final delivery to customer by participating in peer review of documentation; work is reviewed by senior staff at frequent intervals Often interacts with: Internal customers Program Leads External customers, suppliers and subcontractors Department personnel Members of Engineering and Technical Staff Engineering Personnel Works with little instruction on day-to-day work and with specific instructions on new or high level assignments Full use and application of standard principles, theories, concepts, and techniques Provides resolutions to an assortment of problems of moderately complex scope Uses judgment within defined practices and procedures KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: ---Considerable knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar ---Considerable written communication skills and the ability to tailor communication to target audience ---Considerable verbal communication, listening and interviewing skills ---Considerable ability to research highly technical information and interpret data ---Considerable An understanding of DoD MIL Standards and style guides and the ability to adhere to and implement such standards to technical documentation ---Strives to grow expertise in the fundamentals of their job (i.e. production tools, projects, DoD MIL STD, IETMS, etc.) ---Develops solutions to a variety of problems of moderate scope and complexity ---Considerable experience with editing and production tools (i.e. MS Word, Arbor Text, etc.) ---Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action ---Considerable ability to build productive internal/external working relationship ---Frequently interacts with internal company and external contacts ---Represents organization on specific projects as required ---Works under only very general supervision ---Provides work direction to other employees as required Company Overview General Dynamics Mission Systems (GDMS) engineers a diverse portfolio of high technology solutions, products and services that enable customers to successfully execute missions across all domains of operation.
