Position Summary

As our Vice President & Counsel, Privacy, Data Strategy & Security and Intellectual Property Practice, you will provide enterprise leadership for a multi-disciplinary team of attorneys and paraprofessionals combining our privacy, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and intellectual property practices into one fully integrated and coordinated group.

You will lead a collaborative approach to help Guardian's businesses navigate their business-critical privacy, data protection and data security issues as well as provide counsel to our Digital to Consumer (e-commerce) business and our data analytics professionals who are focused on innovative opportunities to improve our customers' experiences.

You will advise our business leaders on responding to cybersecurity events, including by partnering with other Law colleagues on regulatory inquiries and civil litigation. Your strategic advice includes both legal and technical assistance with data issues that arise in M&A diligence, licensing and vendor contracting. In addition, you will assist our business partners to determine what data they should delete or not collect because of cybersecurity, privacy or other risks.

You will provide counsel and thought leadership in protecting Guardian's interest in trademark, copyright, advertising design and related intellectual property matters.

You will build a team of legal professionals with deep technical knowledge which will allow them to translate complex technical findings into legal and business decision points. This will enable us to provide a pragmatic approach to identifying and coordinating the key elements of effective incident response and overall data strategy.

Your Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

* Identify and deliver strategic data security objectives in support of our Guardian enterprise. * Continuously review and monitor management of key risks in areas of privacy, data security and intellectual property vulnerability and assist in the development and implementation of corrective actions. * Assess the effectiveness of policies and procedures to ensure that they are current and relevant to changing business environment and evolving technologies. * Develop a strong working relationship with business executives across our enterprise. * Maintain a strong working knowledge of all relevant data privacy, security and intellectual property regulations, including insurance, broker and distribution, as well as advances in technology. * Interact with state insurance and federal regulators as required. * Build a "best in class" privacy, data security and intellectual property practice.

Functional Leadership

* Select, inspire, develop, and retain an outstanding team, empowering them to execute with excellence on Guardian's privacy, data strategy, security and IP imperatives. * Determine and track key enterprise-wide metrics that enable the evaluation of Guardian's privacy and data security initiatives effectiveness and impact on the business. * Manage the department's budget, resources and priorities, prudently engaging and managing outside resources as needed. * Serve as a key spokesperson for the company and its executives on privacy, data strategy and IP matters. * Collaborate with the business executives and Chief Information Security Officer on enterprise-level internal data security initiatives. * Act as an advisor on incidents and events, effectively manage issues and crisis that violate policies and procedures and take a leadership role in managing crises and the aftermath as needed.

Reporting Relationships

As our Vice President & Counsel, Privacy, Data Strategy & Security and Intellectual Property Practice, you will report to our Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel who reports to our Executive Vice President and General Counsel.

Your Qualifications

* A Juris Doctor degree is required. * An exceptional track record of 15 years with consistent achievement and leadership in corporate data security. Ideal candidate has significant experience within the life insurance industry.

* Experience within a top-tier US domestic life insurance organization with strong expertise and capabilities in data strategy, security, privacy and intellectual property. * Presenting to and managing board of director processes, presentations and relationships. * Demonstrated ability to navigate in a matrixed organization, where influence and partnership are key factors for success. * Selection, development and retention of talented individuals in creating and leading highly engaged, high-performance teams. * Demonstrated track record of building a change resilient organization.

Functional Leadership

* Strong business acumen in life insurance, especially relative to regulatory compliance in the insurance and/or asset management sectors. * Well-informed industry knowledge across a broad range of insurance and investment products and platforms, trends, and competitor intelligence/strategies. * Strong written and verbal skills including strong public presentation skills and as a spokesperson.


We have a preference for you to be located in the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut Tri-State area. We are open to other locations within the continental United States. This position will be a remote/work from home position until we reopen our offices. At that time, you can continue to work from home or in one of our beautiful office locations with a preference for our Hudson Yards location in mid-town Manhattan.


Depending on your work location, less than 10% travel will be required for this role.
